What you should do on a date or one-night stand

This is not what I'm searching for. Written on 21-01-2011 by Lisadupuy

After a night out you wake up in a stranger's bed. While you look around, dazed and surprised, you ask yourself who this other person, lying next to you, is. The next day you can see your date running your way enthusiastically, holding a rose for you. Something like that you did not expect. The only question that you can think of at that moment is: "How do I get away?"

One-night stands

Usually, you yourself are the one responsible for your one-night stand. Alcohol is often the cause of such a short-lived romance (and even more often so when you are on holiday). Even if you do regret the amounts of alcohol you consumed the other night that does not make you turn back time. So, be yourself and do not complain about the fact that normally you are not the kind person who would have gone home with a stranger. After all, that is exactly what you have done.

'No-one will believe you if you innocently admit that you've never had a one-night stand before.'

When the two of you wake up together, there will be a certain atmosphere. You should try to pay attention to the other's signals. If they ask you to go take a shower, you can be fairly sure that he or she would like to see you leave as soon as possible. If you yourself want to leave, it is permissible to use a credible excuse.
It is of course also possible that you do like the person you've woken up to! Should this be the case, then you shouldn't be afraid to ask his or her number- who knows what might happen between you. Furthermore, the best thing to do is to say goodbye in a proper manner and to talk with one another about your feelings concerning the previous night.

Dating

A situation that's different but also familiar to virtually everyone is the well-known date. And here too, a date can get you in situations you had rather not hoped for.

'The date went perfectly. Right until the moment where I made a joke and heard her laugh for the first time.'

Even when meeting one another, you can already be disenchanted with your date. Their clothes for example might throw you off, while you smell something unpleasant about them, because he or she has a bad breath or a smelly body odor. Once you are engaged in conversation, then too annoyances can occur. The other person might lack a sense of humor, have bad manners, drink too much alcohol, not have a whole lot to say, laugh in an annoying way, talk about ex-partners or on the whole come across as dumb or stupid. These are the most important annoyances during a date.
It is normal to be tense or nervous right before going on a date, but you will notice that the better prepared you are, the more confident you will feel during your rendezvous.

Don't make it hard for yourself

A major advantage of the first date is that it does not have to take too long, even if you are actually enjoying yourself. One hour or two can be a sufficient time. So if you can already tell that the other person is no someone you want to date with again, you do not risk having to spend the entire evening with this person. In any case, be polite and try to empathize or engage with your date. Usually you can sense when you make a joke and what kind of joke would not hurt him or her.
Furthermore, the location of your date is vital. Going out for a full meal is probably not preferable; instead, choose a cozy café. This way, it is easier to leave if you are not enjoying the date.

A last tip: it is important that you stick to what your gut tells you while you are out dancing or on a date. If your heart is telling you to get together with that one person you are curious about, do not hesitate and ask them out on a date! Even if the date is not a success, at least it is another experience that you have gone through. And that in itself might turn out to be another life lesson.
